Mozes Konig- 6 Tips on coping in a Heat Wave.
The weather in Israel lately has been HOT. We are sort of used to heat but when it becomes oppressive in the form of a heat wave, well we all need reminding how best to stay cool.
Hydration
First and foremost, stay hydrated. Drink lots of liquid, preferably water, cold but not freezing, because it’s harder to drink quantities when the water is too cold.
Fans/Air Conditioning.
Air Conditioning, or regular fans. Ceiling fans have become popular, once installed they are generally reliable and don’t take valuable floor real estate. Safe to be left on for long periods.
Turn off Lights and other heat emitting appliances.
Most people have switched to florescent lighting which is both “greener”- using less energy and also emits minimum heat when compared to traditional bulbs, and halogen even more.
Diet
During a heat wave you want to keep away from heavy protein-based foods and meals. Sticking to fruits and veg as much as possible will help you stay cool.
Cotton sheets
Falling asleep in the heat is always a challenge. Give yourself a break and use 100% cotton sheets. The only cool way to sleep, if you use sheets during a heat wave.
Curtains/Shades-during the day hours
If you’re lucky to have shades, curtains or blinds, CLOSE them during the day. Dark, but much cooler. Obviously once the sun is down you can and should open to let in fresh air.
